Trekking is getting popular day by day in India especially among youngsters. It has now become a favorite outdoor activity for many people. Many people on their weekends go trekking in their nearby trekking spots. Trekking is not just an activity to simply walk but it is a way of learning and exploring your surroundings. 

Mumbai, which is considered a city of dreams, holds many popular trekking sites for both newbies and experts. Here are 10 Amazing Spots for Trekking in Mumbai which will leave you awe-inspired. 

Sinhagad Fort is at a distance of 192 km from Mumbai.

It is at a distance of 32 km from Pune junction and located in the southwest city. This place is popularly known as Lion fort, the word ‘Sinhagad’ itself means ‘Lion’.  This place was historically called Kondana; the fort has witnessed many famous battles. The most famous battle which was fought here was ‘battle of Sinhagad in 1671 CE.

This is one of the most popular places for trekking in Maharashtra. 

  • Ratangad Fort — Bhandardara

Ratangad fort is located at a distance of 197 km from Mumbai. Ratan gad Fort is almost 400 years old, which was under the Maratha King Shivaji and is situated at  Ratanwadi village in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.

This majestic fort has four gates that are called Ganesh, Hanuman, Konkan, and Trimbak. Also, there are two caves in this fort, One cave is bigger and another cave is smaller that can only accommodate 8-10 people. 

Ratangad fort becomes more beautiful during the post-monsoon season of October to December as the surrounding areas of the fort get covered with lush green trees. This makes it the best trekking destination for trekkers, also you will get a beautiful panoramic view of the valley in the Sahyadri mountain range. 

      3.Lohagad Fort —Lonavala

Lohagad Fort is at a distance of 114 km from Mumbai. This fort has a historical record and is situated at the Sahyadri hills in the Lonavala region of Maharashtra. This place is one of the popular heritage sites in Maharashtra as many tourists visit Lonavala every year. 

Similar to Ratangad fort, people can enter the fort through any of the four entrances that are; Maha Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja, Hanuman Darwaja and Narayan Darwaja. 

  1. Kalsubai Peak / Mount Kalsubai — Bhandardara

Kalsubai peak is at a distance of 165 km from Mumbai. This famous destination is situated in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Kalsubai peak is a popular place for trekking in Maharashtra. The peak of Kalsubai is about  5400 feet, making it the highest peak in Maharashtra. It is a famous trekking destination in Maharashtra.

If you want to get the whole experience, then you must visit the  Kalsubai trek from September to February.

  1. Prabalgad Fort / Prabal Fort —  Near Matheran

Prabalgad Fort is at a distance of 61 km from Mumbai and is located between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra. This place is quite small as compared to other forts but there is no compromise with the enjoyment of tourists. 

This fort is surrounded by breathtaking landscape and vegetation of fauna that makes it a popular destination in  India. From the top of the Prabalgad fort, you will get to see the picturesque vistas of the beautiful green vegetation.

Irshalgad is a fortress located between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra and is only 66 km away from Mumbai. It is considered as a sister fort to Prabalgad fort. This trek begins from the village Karja, which is near Karjat railway station. One can find Irshalwadi village by following the route from Karja village. Irshalgad is a famous tourist destination in Matheran, Maharashtra.

Mahuli Fort is located near the district of Thane. At 2700 feet from the ground, Mahuli fort is considered the highest peak in the district.

It offers you the bird’s eye view of exuberant greenery and serene beauty. It comes under the authority of Tansa wildlife sanctuary. Reaching Mahuli fort can take you almost two hours. Also, there is a Lord Shiva temple situated at the top of the castle.

Vikatgad is just 88 km away from Mumbai. Is also known as Peb Fort. The word ‘Peb’ is derived from the goddess Pebi and the word ‘Vikatgad’ is named in the shape of the Elephant Headed God, Ganesh. There is a historical reference related to this place that Shivaji Maharaj used the caves of the fort to store the grains.
