Understanding the Dasa Mahavidyas
In the ancient Hindu scriptures, the Dasa Mahavidyas are described as Wisdom Goddesses who devotees worship in order to gain many siddhis or powers. The worship of these Mahavidyas is called Sadhana. Here, the devotee focuses on a single Goddess and tries to please her. Each Goddess also represents a form of spiritual knowledge that leads to God-realization.
These Goddesses symbolize ten outstanding personalities of the Divine Mother. Their names are Kali, Tara, Tripurasundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, and Kamala.
Space is divided into ten directions, east, west, south, north, south-east, south-west, north-east, north-west, above, and below. Similarly, the Divine Mother has ten outstanding personalities, or the Dasa Maha Vidyas. Each of these ten great Vidyas is a Brahma Vidya or spiritual knowledge. One who does Sadhana in any of these Vidyas attains the supreme purpose of life, self-realization, and God-realization. In essence, they grasp that the Goddess is not different from one’s self. All these Vidyas are benevolent deities.
Though all these Vidyas lead to the ultimate Reality, they are not the same. Each Vidya is different from the other. According to our ability and aptitude, we can realize the great Goddess. Some may identify with her power, others with her ability to paralyze or with her beauty and bliss. To reach the Divine Mother, we may choose one particular path and adore one particular aspect of the Divine. This enables quick progress in our Sadhana. The ultimate aim is to achieve perfect identification with the Divine.
In India, for centuries, the worship of the Dasa Mahavidyas was widely prevalent. In south India, the Vidya of Sundari, Sri Vidya, is popular. In the far north and north-west, in Kashmir and Tibet, Tara is more popular. In the north-east, especially in West Bengal, the cult of Kali is well-known. In this manner, entire India venerates the Divine Mother.
The Dasa Mahavidyas comprise the 10 different forms of Shakti. Dasa means ‘ten’, Maha means ‘great’, and Vidya means ‘knowledge’. They are Goddesses who represent different forms of divine knowledge or wisdom that enable us to realize God.
These Vidyas have the power to bestow both material boons and spiritual enlightenment. Each Mahavidya has her own unique traits and significance.
These are the ten forms of Mahavidyas:
1.Kali
2.Tara
3.Tripurasundari/Shodashi
4.Bhuvaneshvari
5.Bhairavi
6.Chinnamasta
7.Dhumawati
