Even though the boat is watertight, it can’t be kept warm by an on-board fire. You cannot allow a fire to start on a ship, no matter what type of vessel you are. Experts in marine science warn that it is very difficult to extinguish a fire once it has spread. The flames will cause the boat to burn. Training in fire prevention is essential. Signal Connect worked with fire safety experts in order to develop this safety checklist for boat captains.

    Marine Fire Protection Standards

Fire prevention is more effective than firefighting because it stops flames spreading. Training everyone on your boat properly is the first step to fire prevention. Training should include firefighting as well as fire prevention. Popular training programs include the International Convention on Standard of Training, Certificate and Watch keeping. You will also find information on firefighting and prevention. The type of training you receive depends on where your boat is located.

    Fire Hazards

Boats are most at risk from fuel spillages. However, fuel spillages can be prevented by following these guidelines issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

    • Make sure you close all hatches before you start fueling.
    • All tobacco products must be removed from boats.
    • Turn off all the engines and electrical equipment.
    • Remove passengers.
    • The filling nozzle should come in direct contact the tank.
    • Spill fuel.
    • Ventilate with open ports, hatches, and doors when necessary.
    • Run the blower for atleast a Four minutes.
    • Check the bilges for fuelvapors before you start the engine.

You must smell the fuel after you’ve finished filling up your boat. Are you smelling fuel? If so, don’t start your engine. You can continue to run your blowers and keep the bilge access ports closed until you no longer see any fumes. You can also test the fuel vapors inside your blower intake tube.

    Electric Problems and Boat Fires

Electrical problems can often cause boat fires. Learn more about electrical problems. Do-it-yourself wiring is possible. These types of installations are often done incorrectly by using electrical tape. These installations require waterproof connectors as well as marine-rated electrical taps. Proper marine fire safety electronics installation requires many details. All electronics should be installed by experts with maritime fire safety experience.

    Fire Prevention Boat Maintenance

Poor maintenance is the main reason for most onboard fuels and electric fires. You must prevent this from happening to your boat! You should inspect your fuel system regularly, with special attention to the fuel lines. Fuel lines should be replaced if they show signs of wear, cracks, or discoloration. Use stainless steel hose clamps to keep your lines secure and clean. Not too tight that it cuts the line. You should inspect your tank for signs of corrosion, swelling or bulging. These and other tips can prevent a boat from starting to burn.
