How do diaphragm pumps with air-operated diaphragms work? What role may they play in your process? This page explains the full operating principle.

Air operated double diaphragm pumps (AODD) are one of the most versatile and straightforward pumping options available, making them a great instrument for handling a wide range of fluids.

The Working Principle of a Diaphragm Pump

A positive displacement pump with two flexible diaphragms that reciprocate back and forth, forming a temporary chamber that both sucks in and expels fluid through the pump, is known as a double diaphragm. The diaphragms serve as a barrier between the liquid and the air.

    The first stroke

The two diaphragms are joined by a shaft that runs through the central part, which houses the air valve. The air valve’s job is to transfer pressurized air to the rear of diaphragm number one, moving it away from the center section. A press stroke is caused by the number one diaphragm, which pushes the liquid out of the pump. A suction stroke is being performed by diaphragm number two at the same time. The air behind diaphragm number two is pushed into the atmosphere, causing the liquid to be pushed to the suction side by atmospheric pressure. The suction ball valve is pushed away from its seat, allowing fluid to pass through it and into the liquid chamber.

    The second stroke

The air valve switches the flow of air from diaphragm number one to the rear of diaphragm number two when the pressurized diaphragm number one reaches the end of its stroke. As a result of the compressed air pushing diaphragm number two away from the central block, diaphragm number one is dragged toward it. The discharge ball valve in pump chamber number two is forced off its seat, whereas the discharge ball valve in pump chamber number one is pushed off its seat. The air valve returns the air to the back of diaphragm number one when the stroke is completed, restarting the cycle.

Where Can Diaphragm Pumps Be Used?

Diaphragm pumps are used in a variety of industries. There is a plethora of building materials available to create a bewildering array of layouts to accommodate problematic fluids like

    • Corrosive chemical
    • Shear-sensitive foodstuffs and pharma product
    • Volatile solvents
    • Smaller solids
    • Viscous, sticky fluids
    • Dirty water and abrasive slurry
    • Creams, gels, and oils

An AODD pump can be specified for ATEX zones, EC1935/2004, FDA, and 3A sanitary applications, among other industry compliance requirements, in addition to fluid handling properties.

    Why Diaphragm Pumps?

The AODD pump is a versatile workhorse that allows customers in a wide range of industries to standardize on a single pump type to handle a wide range of fluids. The pump may be positioned wherever it is needed as long as compressed air is available, and it can easily be relocated from a factory and switched to other operations if conditions change. Whether the fluid being handled demands a delicate pumping action, is chemically or physically aggressive, or both, the positive displacement AODD pump is a cost-effective and low-maintenance option.

Why Choose the pump in NEW ERA ENGINEERS?
