    Product Definition:

    The organic molecule 1,3-butadiene has the formula (CH2=CH)2. It is a colorless gas that condenses quickly into a liquid. It is used as a predecessor to synthetic rubber in the industry. The molecule in 1,3-butadiene is made up of two vinyl groups joined together and is the most straightforward conjugated diene.

    Factors Impacting the 1,3-butadiene Production Cost:

    1,3-butadiene is largely utilised as a chemical intermediary and a monomer in the synthesis of polymers such as synthetic rubbers and elastomers, and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), which is predominantly used in tyre manufacturing. 1,3 Polymers, latexes, and plastic products all include butadiene. Apart from that, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber resin is utilised to reduce tyre weight, hence the market for 1,3 butadiene in the automotive sector is expected to rise during the forecast years. Furthermore, it is also commonly utilised in tyre manufacturing since it improves tyre properties including rolling resistance, wear, and traction. As a result, rising automobile tyre manufacturing is expected to be one of the primary reasons that is driving up demand for 1,3 butadiene. Hence, these factors are likely to impact the production cost of 1,3-butadiene.

    Procurement Resource Assessment of 1,3-butadiene Production:

    The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of 1,3-butadiene via extraction from C4 hydrocarbons via dehydrogenation of n-butane and via ethanol. In the production process of 1,3-butadiene via extraction from C4 hydrocarbons the extractive distillation with a polar aprotic solvent such as acetonitrile, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, furfural, or dimethylformamide isolates butadiene from the other four-carbon hydrocarbons generated in steam cracking, from which it is then stripped by distillation. The production of 1,3-butadiene via dehydrogenation of n-butane involves Houdry Catadiene technique, which was discovered during World War II, and at present is used to commercially generate butadiene from n-butane. This requires processing butane at high temperatures over alumina and chromia. Additionally, in the production of 1,3-butadiene via ethanol the process includes a single-step method invented by Sergei Lebedev that converts ethanol to butadiene, hydrogen, and water at 400–450 °C using a variety of metal oxide catalysts.
